COALITION OF 38 GRASSROOTS GROUPS CALL ON DAVID DEWHURST TO PARTICIPATE IN SENATE DEBATES

DALLAS, TEXAS, July 12, 2012 – The organizers of 38 grassroots groups and nearly a thousand individual Texans from over 250 communities across Texas have joined together in an open letter to U.S. Senate candidate David Dewhurst.  The letter requests that Dewhurst agree to participate in at least five debates to be held across the State of Texas between now and July 31.

Noting that “the decision facing Texas’ voters in this Senate election is a critical decision over Texas’ representation in the United States Senate at a very critical time for this nation,” the letter expresses strong support for “open, vigorous and thorough public debate in all elections, and particularly in Texas’ United States Senate race.”

The letter calls upon Mr. Dewhurst to “join Mr. Cruz in publicly committing to participate in at least five public debates to take place in communities around the state, in a collective effort to inform and enlighten the people of Texas as to the qualities and qualifications of the men contending to represent them in the halls of Washington.”

Dewhurst has drawn continued criticism for skipping nearly 40 candidate debates and forums during the regular primary campaign season, and for declining invitations to such events during the runoff period, as well.  The authors of the open letter hope to persuade Mr. Dewhurst to engage with Texas voters directly and provide them with opportunities to get to know both candidates better.

AN OPEN LETTER TO DAVID DEWHURST ON PROPOSED DEBATES

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst

Dewhurst for Texas

P.O. Box 2667

Austin, Texas 78768

Mr. Dewhurst:

We the undersigned write to express our strong support for open, vigorous and thorough public debate in all elections, and particularly in Texas’ United States Senate race.

The decision facing Texas’ voters in this Senate election is a critical decision over Texas’ representation in the United States Senate at a very critical time for this nation. It is our fervent belief that the people of Texas deserve every reasonable opportunity to question, and challenge, and vet the candidates who seek the privilege and honor of representing Texas in public office. We believe that the people of Texas are best served when they are provided with ample opportunities to get to know, full well, the candidates presented to them. The people of Texas can, and should, accept nothing less.

To that end, we call upon you to join Mr. Cruz in publicly committing to participate in at least five public debates to take place in communities around the state, in a collective effort to inform and enlighten the people of Texas as to the qualities and qualifications of the men contending to represent them in the halls of Washington.

For Texas,

– The Undersigned
